DEA notice on synthetic kratom prompts HCA and DOH planning

Chair Tony Walton told the committee that the DEA filed a notice of intent to temporarily schedule several synthetic kratom compounds, including compounds referred to as 700h, MGM‑15 and MGM‑16, and that the 30‑day public comment period closed. He said HCA is convening an internal work group and that DOH is preparing public communications; DOH staff confirmed a temporary scheduling effective in early August.
A DOH representative noted the substances will be temporarily scheduled as Schedule I beginning in early August and that doing so will make manufacture, sale and distribution illegal while the temporary scheduling is in effect. Committee members discussed the likely impact: when an illicit synthetic that some people have been using is removed from the market, clinicians and community providers may see people presenting in withdrawal and in need of treatment support. Walton said HCA will post links and HCA/ADAI will convene trainings (ADAI training scheduled Nov. 4) to prepare behavioral-health providers.
The agencies said they will circulate guidance and resources via the committee web page and follow up as the federal process concludes.
