Staff recommends removing portable Front Street speed humps; council to consider on business agenda

Public Works and traffic staff recommended that council remove the portable speed humps currently installed on Front Street and pursue durable design solutions in a future Front Street redesign. Staff said the humps were installed as a COVID era temporary measure and are costly to reinstall and maintain; they also noted that vehicle speed studies show 85th‑percentile speeds downtown near 13–15 mph.
Public Works asked for council direction to return the item on the business agenda for final action. The fire chief and several councilmembers indicated support for removal because the humps can slow emergency response and damage emergency vehicles over time; other councilmembers noted pedestrian activity downtown and expressed a preference for retaining temporary measures until a full streetscape redesign is funded and scheduled.
