Learn and Earn program at Esperanza gives students college credits and internships, CEO says

Loriana Jimenez, a student at Esperanza Preparatory Academy, told Bronx Talk she is in her first year of college coursework and has earned nine credits through the Learn and Earn program while completing internships.
Sheila Duke said Learn and Earn is a workforce-development program funded by the Department of Youth and Community Development and housed at Esperanza Preparatory Academy. Duke said students typically enter the program in 10th grade, take coursework connected to college credit, work with a success coach who performs monthly check-ins, and receive stipends while completing internships.
Loriana described how the program helped her gain confidence and public-speaking experience: “I would say my number 1 thing is to speak out,” she said, adding that internships and on-the-job responsibilities at events like the Success Summit opened new interests for her.
Duke said the program tracks participants through high school and into their first years of college, and that Roads to Success works with schools and community cornerstones to provide wraparound support and placement in internships.
