Sheila Duke said Roads to Success, in partnership with Aim High and Council member Kevin Riley, loaded two buses at 3:00 a.m. and sent more than 60 Bronx students to InvestFest in Atlanta, the organization’s third consecutive year attending the conference.
Duke described InvestFest as a three-day event run by Earn Your Leisure that mixes panels, interviews, cultural programming and a new youth track tailored to young people. She said students attend preparatory workshops on marketing, business planning and pitching; the pitch competition awards a $10,000 first prize to a winning team or idea.
Duke also said the trip includes an out-of-state college-tour stop in Virginia to expose students to campus life before traveling on to Atlanta. She noted parent workshops and said a few parents accompany participants so families can continue conversations about budgeting and financial literacy at home.
The moderator and Duke emphasized the trip’s experiential benefits for students who may not have previously traveled outside New York City. Duke called the conference “transformative” for students who want to explore entrepreneurship and investing.
