Rainier council appoints Maureen Baker to vacant Seat 5

The Rainier City Council voted 3–1 on Jan. 13 to appoint Maureen Baker to the seat left vacant by the death of Councilmember Dennis McVey; the seat will appear on the 2027 general election ballot.
The Rainier City Council appointed Maureen Baker to vacant Seat 5 during its Jan. 13, 2026 meeting.
A motion to appoint Maureen Baker was made by Councilmember Arnbrister and seconded by Councilmember Roth; the motion passed 3–1 with Councilmember Kemp recording the lone dissent. The council noted that one of the applicants had just completed a council term last month and said they were comfortable making the appointment during the 90‑day window allowed by law. The newly appointed Maureen Baker was sworn in immediately by Tami Justice, the city’s Clerk Treasurer.
Mayor Shaw and council members said the appointee will stand for election the next time the seat appears on the ballot, the general election in 2027. The council followed its agenda procedure after the city attorney reviewed the statutory 90‑day appointment period.
