Commission approves taking two probationary firefighters off probation

The Michigan City Fire Merit Commission voted Aug. 3 to remove two probationary firefighters from probation after the fire chief said they had met required milestones. “His actual anniversary date was the 06/30/2026. I’d like to ask that he come off probation, as of that date,” the chief said, asking the commission to make the change retroactive.
Commissioners moved and seconded the request and approved it by voice vote. The chief also noted a second probationary firefighter had completed EMT certification on 07/02/2026 and asked that firefighter’s probation be ended effective that date; commissioners approved that request as well. No further personnel actions were taken at the meeting.
The removals were recorded as routine personnel confirmations and do not change staffing authorizations; the chief said the moves simply make official what had already occurred in practice.
