Fire chief: July saw 488 calls, department 46 calls behind last year

The Michigan City Fire Merit Commission heard a monthly operations report from the fire chief on Aug. 3. “We had 488 total calls for the month of July,” the chief said, giving a breakdown that included 20 fire calls (two confirmed structure fires), 306 medical calls and 26 hazardous-situation responses.
The chief told commissioners the medical calls included approximately 235 illness-related incidents, 66 injury or trauma calls and five other medical responses; the department also recorded three rescues and about 100 non-emergencies such as false alarms or canceled responses. He said the department used Narcan on three medical calls during the month. The chief compared the month to last year, saying the department is at 2,922 calls for the year so far — 46 fewer than the 2,968 recorded through the same date last year.
Commissioners did not take any formal action on operations beyond noting the report and acknowledging upcoming staff anniversaries. The chief also flagged overtime pressure for gaps while new hires complete required academy training.
