Neighbors cite traffic, noise and lighting concerns over proposed truck facility on Courthouse Road

Several neighbors spoke at the Planning Commission's May 13 meeting to oppose the proposals for 14417 Courthouse Road, telling commissioners the projects would harm a quiet, historic neighborhood.

Joe Elmore said he lives across the street and was "not in support of this business," citing existing traffic issues on Courthouse Road and saying tractor-trailer operations would exacerbate congestion, cleaning of trucks could aggravate a low water table, and maintenance activity would increase noise. Milton Hargrave said his "major concern is the surrounding homeowners" and raised worries about truck noise, lights at night and dust. Chip Bain pressed who would police dirt dumping on adjacent railroad property and asked how the county would monitor whether the operator exceeded an allowable number of trucks. Hampton Gordon said he had not seen site drawings and was "concerned" by the lack of a visual plan for the business.

The commission heard a contrasting account from former site operator Austin Johnson, who said his mulch operation saw about 60 vehicles per day and sometimes "at least ten trucks on the property picking up and dropping off at one time," and reported he did not receive neighbor complaints while operating there. Commissioners said those competing accounts weighed into their consideration of operational limits and screening requirements.
