Emergency planning director proposes tsunami signage and outreach in low-lying waterfront areas

Dan Schoonmaker explained updated inundation mapping for a worst-case Cascadia event and proposed placing entry/exit signage at major approaches into downtown (Hostmark/Fjord, King Olaf, Jensen) and multiple signs at park access points (Fish Park entrances, Waterfront Park, Nelson Park, Lions Park, Oyster Plant Park). He told council the state supplied signage consistent with other jurisdictions and staff recommended public education plus signage in high-traffic locations.
Council members asked whether signs could include QR codes linking to preparedness resources; Schoonmaker said staff would explore that before installation. The council signaled consensus to proceed with installation and outreach, with Public Works to handle deployment.
