Council approves downtown pride banners for June, amends schedule to transition to U.S. banners for July

Poulsbo’s City Council voted May 6 to fly pride banners on city-owned downtown banner posts from June 1–30 and approved an amendment to transition directly from pride banners into U.S.-flag-themed banners for the month of July.
Councilmember Bridal Livdahl moved the main motion to display pride banners and Councilmember Rick Eckert proposed the amendment that would spare Public Works an extra installation step between the end of June and the Fourth of July. The council approved the amendment and then passed the main motion by roll call. Mayor Ed Stern introduced the item and called for the votes.
Councilman Michael Fitzpatrick framed the banners as government speech about equal rights: “the pride flag is a statement by the city that every resident who lives in this city gets to enjoy full and equal rights and protections under the law,” he said during debate. Councilmembers also urged members of the public not to vandalize the banners after past incidents; Eckert told listeners, “If you don’t like it, just move on with your day.”
The decision amends the city’s seasonal banner schedule only; Public Works will carry out installation and take-down per the amended calendar. No additional funding decisions tied to the banner display were recorded in the meeting minutes.
