Eldridge police to buy replacement K-9; retiring dog to be transferred to handler

The Eldridge Police Department received council approval to purchase a dual-purpose K-9 and a four-week training program, to be funded from the department's canine-donation account. The chief said the department has sufficient donated funds to cover the estimated $18,000 cost and that the purchase will not affect the general fund.
The chief also requested permission for the K-9 handler to purchase the retiring dog, K-9 Marty, from the city for $1 upon retirement so the handler will continue the dog's care. The council approved the purchase and supported the customary $1 transfer to the handler when the dog leaves active service.
The department plans a retirement open house for the outgoing K-9 and expects the new K-9 training to start in mid-October with operational availability by the week of Nov. 8.
