Superintendent recommends closing Intermediate School and shifting grades; public forums set

Superintendent Brian Rentsch told the Claymont City Board of Education that he is recommending closing the Intermediate School and moving the 8th grade to the high school, 4th and 5th grades to the middle school, and 3rd grade to the elementary school. He told trustees a decision needs to be made by the end of the month to implement changes for the next school year.
Rentsch scheduled a public forum for Monday, March 16 at 6 p.m. at the Middle School to answer questions from staff and the community and a follow-up special meeting on Tuesday, March 31 at 6 p.m. at the Administrative Office. The board discussed fiscal concerns and operational issues during the strategic planning discussion but did not take a formal vote on closures at the March 9 meeting. The superintendent's recommendation therefore remains a proposal pending further public input and board action.
