Construct asks New Marlborough to back Cassilis renovation as $350,000 financing gap remains

Joey Lindstrom, executive director of Construct, Inc., told the New Marlborough Select Board that demolition on the Cassilis property cost more and took longer than expected after crews discovered asbestos, and that the project’s design changes and higher development costs left a financing gap of roughly $350,000. He said Allegrone has been brought on as the new construction team and that construction could begin once final funding is secured. Lindstrom said the fence at the property was removed "because it was costly, not attractive, and did not provide much security."
Construct asked the town to support the project in one of three ways: by submitting an application to the Small Town Development Program, by reducing or waiving building-permit fees, or by offering relief under the existing payment-in-lieu-of-taxes (PILOT) agreement. Mari Enoch, Town Administrator, told the Board that Construct’s staff expected the Small Town Development Program application to request about $100,000 and that the application was due June 3. The Select Board voted unanimously to authorize Enoch to submit an application for an amount up to $300,000 for the Cassilis Farm project (Tara B. White Aye; Bill West Aye; Maggie Arian Aye). The town noted a projected completion date of fall 2027 if funding is secured.
