City manager: Clay School demolition near completion; TAP design grant awarded for Hemphill Tunnel

City Manager Herron reported July 21 that the Clay School demolition project is about 90% complete and commended contractors for the work. "The Clay School demolition project is about 90% complete," he said, adding that a storm sewer catch basin and some seating remain to be installed. Herron told council that DLAP funding for a planned set of residential demolitions has come through, enabling the city to proceed with those contracts.
Herron also announced a TAP (Transportation Alternatives Program) grant award of $150,000 for engineering and design for restoration of the Hemphill Tunnel, with a required $30,000 local match. He said the full restoration is roughly a $1,000,000 project and indicated the design grant positions the city to pursue a subsequent construction grant. Herron asked council to consider two readings on a paving ordinance that would allow work to begin sooner.
