Council expands Railroad Days alcohol variance to full event area

Council debated a staff recommendation to confine alcohol to the main stage area before approving an expanded variance to allow alcohol across the full Railroad Days event area. Event organizer Sandra Hood described plans for a cordoned beer garden with signage and said service would be limited to beer: "It'll be just the beer. We're not serving mixed drinks or wine."
Sergeant Ortiz and council members discussed enforcement and the need for the license holder (the Eagles Lodge) to check IDs and operate within the parameters of an ABC license; Ortiz warned that license holders could lose the privilege if they do not comply. Council members encouraged the organizer to file the ABC application promptly and voted to adopt the road closures and expansion of the variance.
The motion to expand the alcohol variance was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote at the June 5 meeting. Council asked staff to monitor compliance and reiterated that operators holding the liquor license are responsible for maintaining safe service practices.
