Mayor Mary Young opened the session by introducing the City of Benicia—CO Awards, a recognition program the city runs with Republic Services to honor sustained commercial recycling and organics efforts under AB 341 and SB 1383.
Sam Adams accepted the commercial ECO Award on behalf of Bottom of the 5th Sports Bar & Grill. He told the council the bar has operated locally since 1990 and accepted the award for his father, Bruce Adams. "I'm very thrilled to be accepting this on behalf of my dad," Adams said, noting the family business nd the restaurant—ocus on improved organics and recycling practices.
The council also presented a community ECO award to the Benicia Scouts for their Christmas tree recycling program. Staff reported the troop chipped 922 trees in 2024 and that a subset of scouts individually weighed and logged 50 trees to produce an average weight for state green-waste reporting. Christina Thompson, chair of the tree-recycling program, accepted the award and emphasized the troop nd city partnership that supports scout service and environmental education.
The awards program was described by staff as part of the city—ffort to divert more materials from landfills and to encourage local businesses and community groups to lead in sustainable practices. No council action was required; the presentations concluded before the public-comment period.
