Ad hoc discusses $200,000 commitment to buy and extinguish medical debt with RISE/Undo Medical Debt

Chair Edmond Ford Jr. told the committee he had discussed a partnership with Undo Medical Debt and RISE Memphis that would use a county-allied allocation of $200,000 toward purchasing uncollectible medical debt. "There is an agreement that we're still working on where $200,000 of that money will actually go to working collectively with that organization where if they're gonna buy the debt up for 1¢ on the dollar ... eliminating up to $20,000,000 worth of medical debt," he said.
Ford noted that other cities have used ARPA or other funds to buy and cancel large sums of uncollectible medical debt and that county staff will continue outreach to local hospitals and partners to explore participation and data-sharing required to operationalize the program.
