Staff summarized the state's updated school funding framework, saying the per-pupil foundation increase matched district projections at 2.5% and that Michigan has begun implementing a weighted funding system intended to allocate extra dollars for students with greater needs.
"So, basically, what what it is is you have the foundation amount that every kid is worth... and then students with documented special needs... are actually they're given a multiplier based on the severity of that need," the staff member said. He cautioned that the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) will interpret and implement the legislation and that district effects will depend on MDE rules and qualifiers.
