Waste Management briefs council on SB 1383 compliance, events and resident programs

A Waste Management representative (self-identified as Amoisa) updated the council on recycling and organics work tied to California's statewide mandates and local service metrics.

"So for, this chart here that you see on the screen, there are a couple different milestones that we've already met," the presenter said, referencing past compliance efforts and the city's progress toward SB 1383 requirements. The presenter reviewed earlier regulatory milestones (cited in remarks as compliance steps in 2021–2023) and said the city's agreement with the company includes metrics to maintain compliance.

Irene Panier, Mission Viejo's recycling education representative, outlined resident-facing events and practical guidance: a free shred event March 22 (9 a.m., up to five banker-sized boxes), a hazardous-waste drop-off expected in late March (location to be posted on the city website), a compost workshop April 5 at 10 a.m. (space limited; email greenmv@cityofmissionviejo.org) and a self-service compost giveaway at the animal shelter on May 3 starting at 9 a.m. "So our 1st 1 will be, the free shred event... It'll be happening March 22," Panier said.

Waste Management also presented a recycling champion award to Ballpark Pizza Team and offered one month of free service as recognition. The company emphasized the three-container system for single-family homes — black for trash, blue for recycling and green for organics — and encouraged residents to leave recyclables loose, not bagged.

Council members did not pose questions during the presentation; the mayor thanked presenters for the update.
