The Mission Viejo City Council recognized its 2024 employees of the year on Jan. 28, presenting awards to city administrative services analyst Sherry Merrifield, Orange County Fire Authority Engineer Jaime Martinez, and Mission Viejo Police Services Deputy Christopher (Chris) Chung. City Manager Elaine Lister described the city’s peer-nomination process and introduced Merrifield before colleagues read nomination excerpts highlighting her 23 years of service and role in centralized purchasing.
"I am retiring in May," Merrifield said as she accepted the honor, thanking coworkers and the nomination committee. OCFA presenters praised Engineer Martinez’s decade-long tenure and training work; a battalion chief said Martinez “approaches his duties with enthusiasm and a strong work ethic that is second to none.” Deputy Chung told the council he felt “truly honored to accept the Mission Viejo Police Services 2024 employee of the year award,” and speakers emphasized his school-resource role and steady presence at Mission Viejo High School.
Council members and visiting representatives from state and federal offices offered congratulations and posed for photos. The recognitions were ceremonial; no council action was required beyond the presentations.
