Mission Viejo honors Marines and local veteran at council meeting

Mayor Trish Kelly and Assemblymember Kate Sanchez led a series of recognitions Dec. 10 honoring local Marines and a longtime community volunteer. Kate Sanchez introduced Jack Kelly as the 2024 Assembly District 71 Orange County Veteran of the Year and outlined his Marine service and decades of volunteer work in Mission Viejo. "It is my distinct privilege to represent to you from the state assembly," Sanchez said while presenting the award.
The council also recognized Corporal Nicholas Ronick as Marine of the Quarter and Sergeant Angel Busto Hernandez as Non‑Commissioned Officer of the Quarter for Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton. Gail Wood, chairwoman of the Marines and Sailors Adoption Committee, presented gift cards on behalf of the committee and thanked the council for its support. First Lieutenant Dwyer lauded the honorees' service, noting Hernandez will attend drill instructor school next month and describing Ronick's role as a top wrecker operator.
Representatives from Congresswoman Young Kim's office and Senator Catherine Blakespear's office attended and offered congratulatory remarks. The council directed the recognition plaques and certificates be displayed on the city's message board and encouraged residents to support adopted marine families during the holiday season.
