Kane Loader, Trans‑Jordan Board chair and Midvale's representative to the board, told the council the agency is close to opening its first transfer station and outlined costs, operating assumptions and schedule.
Loader said the project footprint is roughly 44,000 square feet and noted vehicle restrictions (maximum 46‑foot vehicles) and tarping policies for transport. On costs he described a $26.5 million figure plus $3 million (presented in staff documents as $29.5 million) and said the board approved a not‑to‑exceed budget of $30 million. "We are planning an open house, VIP open house and dinner, with a soft opening occurring mid‑June 2025," Loader said. The facility is expected to be fully open in July 2025.
Staff presented operating economics used in the financial model: a total handling cost of approximately $15 per ton, an SBI haul contract at $9.25 per ton, and estimated transfer station operating costs of $5.75 per ton, with the landfill subsidizing the station to about $7.50 per ton. Projected throughput that includes nearby east‑side cities and commercial tonnage is roughly 200,000 tons per year; staff noted a break‑even need of about 150,000 tons per year to sustain the station. Loader said the landfill has more than 100 years of life in offsite capacity and that the current landfill is projected to close in 2032, with $5 million reserved for closure and long‑term maintenance.
