Resident and Tobacco Education Council push Dunsmuir toward smoke‑free parks

Stephen Bridal, director of the Dunsmuir Community Resource Center and chair of the county Tobacco Education Council, presented to the council and asked that members consider placing a future voting item to create smoke‑free outdoor spaces in Dunsmuir parks.
Bridal said he has coordinated with Parks and Recreation, which "are 100% in support" of the concept, and brought elementary‑school students’ anti‑tobacco posters to illustrate local youth support. "There’s no safe level of secondhand smoke exposure even outside," Bridal said, and he warned that vaping produces many of the same chemicals found in cigarette secondhand smoke. Councilors later requested a concept item and possible budget for code amendments and outreach.
Multiple council members expressed support for bringing a concept item back for council consideration; staff did not present a draft ordinance at this meeting. The council will schedule the item for a future agenda to permit further analysis and potential code work.
