Council introduces ordinance adopting state fire hazard severity map; Dunsmuir remains in ‘very high’ zone

The Dunsmuir City Council moved and seconded a motion to introduce Ordinance 579 by title, which would adopt the state Fire Marshal’s updated Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps for the city. Staff explained state law (California Government Code §51179) requires adoption of the state map. "We are required to adopt the map, per California government code 51179," staff said.
Staff emphasized that in Dunsmuir the updated map does not change local hazard designations: "The zones have not changed here in Dunsmuir, so everybody is still in the very high fire hazard severity zone," staff said, and added that the airport was the only area that changed on the map. Council made the CEQA findings presented by staff and directed staff to bring Ordinance 579 back for adoption at the next regular meeting.
Council voted unanimously to introduce the ordinance and return it for formal adoption at the next meeting.
