Public hearing: Sunol Glen reviews LCAP priorities, flags absenteeism and early literacy

The Sunol Glen Unified School District held a public hearing on its 2025–26 Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). The superintendent summarized the plan as outlining district goals, planned actions and resource allocations intended to support student success across all grade levels and said the district serves approximately 238 students, many via interdistrict transfers.

The superintendent identified priorities for the coming year including increased social-emotional supports and a full-time counselor, and emphasized an early literacy focus following recent dyslexia legislation. "It outlines our district's goals, planned actions, and resource allocations to support student success across all grade levels," the superintendent said during the presentation. Board members asked clarifying questions about facility needs remaining after bond work and the causes and responses to rising chronic absenteeism.

In response to questions on absenteeism, staff described procedural steps (independent study triggers, SARB meetings) and said interventions include family education about independent study, more robust communication via ParentSquare and newsletters, and additional counseling supports to address social-emotional causes. The superintendent also said screenings for early literacy (a state-approved universal screener) will be implemented in August for TK–5 teachers.

No action was taken at the hearing; the board closed the LCAP hearing and will proceed with routine follow-up and incorporation of the LCAP into the district's planning cycle.
