Disabled Resources Center outlines services available to Avalon residents

Jennifer Kumiyama, executive director of the Disabled Resources Center (DRC), told the Avalon City Council on July 7 that the organization offers a wide range of independent-living services for people with disabilities, and that many core programs are available remotely for Avalon residents.
Kumiyama outlined the DRC’s assistive-technology lending library (loanable items such as wheelchairs and shower chairs), benefits counseling for SSI/SSDI/Medicare/Medi-Cal and CalFresh, emergency and disaster-preparedness assistance, employment and job-retention services including a ticket-to-work program, travel training for public transit and utility-assistance referrals. She noted DRC’s 50th anniversary and said the organization is funded through a mix of federal, state, local, foundation, corporate and private contributions, allowing most services to be provided at no cost to qualifying residents.
Kumiyama invited Avalon residents to access DRC programs remotely and listed the Long Beach office and a North Long Beach satellite location; she also previewed August trainings and a film series aimed at increasing disability advocacy and awareness.
