Police report radios failing; fire department needs bunker gear as council weighs grants and budgets

Chief Siebel told the council two radios — one portable and one mobile — had failed and that replacement quotes were high: “I just got a quote for 1 portable radio, and it’s almost $8,000,” he said, adding a mobile unit would be roughly $4,000. He said new tasers, body cameras and virtual-reality training equipment have arrived and that he will apply for Department of Homeland Security and county grant funds to help offset costs, but acknowledged the available grant pool is limited.
Council also heard that the fire chief requested three sets of new bunker gear at an estimated $4,300 per set because existing gear is outdated; members noted the request may strain the fire budget. Public works reported an estimated $138,000 in damage from a Dec. 8 flood event that may qualify for county reimbursement if thresholds are met.
