Athletic trainers tell board job descriptions lag state law; ask for reclassification review

Jeffrey Wilson, a certified athletic trainer at San Pasqual High School, told the board the district’s athletic-trainer job description, approved in 2010, lists eight duties and omits responsibilities connected to AB 2127 (concussion management) and AB 1653 (heat-illness and cardiac care). He said trainers were denied reclassification and that the old job description creates liability when staff must perform tasks outside the written scope.
Leah Trevillion, athletic trainer at Orange Glen High School, described clinical incidents that illustrate the role’s significance — including a case with a skull fracture and brain bleed that she credited to on-site trainer intervention. She and Wilson asked for a district conversation and a review of job descriptions, pay and classification so trainers can practice according to state law and professional standards.
