Students tell Escondido Union High board slurs continue at Orange Glen; ask for overseen plan

Gillian Lisonbee, a student at Orange Glen High School, told the Escondido Union High School District board that racist slurs are being used “fearlessly” on campus and that bystanders and staff often do not respond: “Every time the n word is said with no consequences is another student, another friend, and classmate of mine that is being hurt.”
Multiple students and a parent described meetings with school administrators that left them unconvinced the problem will be fixed. Rilena Prince said students are suffering from “the bystander effect,” and asked the board to make sure any administrative plan is actually carried out, not just announced. Fatou Gue, founder and president of Orange Glen’s Black Student Union, told trustees she left a meeting with the principal feeling dismissed and said she needed the board’s help to ensure consistent, sustained action.
Board members acknowledged the remarks and said they would take action. Board President Bob Weller told speakers, “We heard you, and we will be taking action,” and the superintendent confirmed the administration will follow up on training and corrective steps. The board did not take immediate action during public comment; speakers asked for ongoing oversight and for specific timelines and reporting on implementation.
