Sustainable Jersey consultant urges Mahwah to promote NJ "Skip the Stuff" bill

Karin LaGreca, Sustainable Jersey consultant, told the Township of Mahwah Environmental Commission that New Jersey's new "Skip the Stuff" bill will take effect Aug. 1, 2026 and change how restaurants supply single-use items. "This bill will require restaurants to supply single-use utensils and condiments only upon request in hopes of reducing waste," LaGreca said.
LaGreca recommended the commission include a short advisory in its community newsletter encouraging local restaurants to proactively update their service practices and ordering procedures to avoid waste and potential compliance issues. She told members the change could be a cost saver for businesses while reducing single-use waste at the local level.
Commissioners did not take a formal vote on an outreach plan during the meeting but the suggestion was recorded for inclusion in commission communications ahead of the bill's Aug. 1 effective date.
