Madison–40th traffic signal planned to improve school crossing; construction targeted for fall

City staff told the council the Madison and 40th intersection will receive a full, dual-mast traffic signal to improve crossings near the school. The project requires property acquisition, coordination with the power company and equipment delivery; staff said they are working through those items and expect to advertise a construction bid in September with installation to follow.
"I would say September sometime. September, October a bid and then we'll start rolling," said John, the staff member overseeing the street work, when asked about a construction timeline. He described the signal as a dual-mast arm configuration to keep corners clear and explained the city has negotiated with the power company and will need to buy some property for the installation.
Council members and public commenters cited safety concerns on 40th Street — including speeding near a skate park and schoolwalk routes — and staff said enforcement and the new signal are part of the response. The project team is also negotiating a change-order and cost-sharing with Wasatch Front Regional Council on nearby 40th Street overlay work; one internal estimate for the additional overlay work was roughly $69,000 in local contribution depending on the split with the regional council.
Staff said prior conduit work may reduce costs in some intersections but added that preexisting utilities and power-location decisions have required adjustments to final pole placement.
