Garland council issues proclamations for boating safety, AAPI Heritage Month and Ethiopian independence

"I, Dylan Hedrick, mayor of the city of Garland, Texas, do hereby proclaim the week of May 16th through the 22nd, 2026 as Safe Boating Week in Garland, Texas," Hedrick read, noting the city's connection to Lake Ray Hubbard and introducing a flotilla commander from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. Flotilla commander Lequaire Hubbard thanked the council for support and outlined volunteer safety work the Auxiliary provides, including vessel safety checks and public education.
Hedrick also proclaimed May 2026 as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and invited festival organizers to the dais. An event organizer thanked the council and said the community looks forward to continued partnership and volunteer support.
The mayor then read a proclamation recognizing the 35th anniversary of Ethiopian independence and encouraged residents to join commemorations. A community representative accepted the recognition and thanked the council for the acknowledgement.
These proclamations were ceremonial and did not require council action; organizers and volunteers used the occasion to highlight upcoming events and volunteer roles in Garland.
