Board agrees to move forward with higher-rated shingle roof option for administrative building

The board reviewed three options to replace aging roofs across the campus and move forward with the heavier category-4 shingle product.

Staff summarized three bids: a commercial category-4 shingle at $443,000, a heavier category-4 shingle at $522,000 with a higher wind rating, and an all-metal roof that had come in under $1,000,000. During discussion trustees weighed aesthetics, wind and hail performance, warranty terms and long-term maintenance costs. Staff noted insurance reimbursements related to prior wind damage and potential depreciation recoveries tied to a signed contract.

In presenting the pricier shingle option, staff said, "and so that product is $522,000" while explaining its heavier construction and improved wind rating. Trustees ultimately moved and voted to proceed with the recommended option (the meeting discussion indicates selection of the higher-rated shingle product). Staff said some savings may be found elsewhere in the capital plan and recommended earmarking funds for future renovation work as needed.

The board’s approval authorizes contracting to proceed; staff will return with finalized contracts and project timelines and will track insurance reimbursements tied to the work.
