Butler County adopts Multiple-Occupancy Private Spaces policy to comply with SB 244

Butler County commissioners on June 16 adopted Resolution No. 26-31 establishing a Multiple-Occupancy Private Spaces policy to comply with 2026 Senate Bill 244.
County Administrator Will Johnson said the law requires public entities to identify covered multiple-occupancy private spaces in public buildings, confirm facility designations, review signage and establish a complaint review process. The policy approved by the Board defines covered spaces, lists exceptions, outlines reasonable steps to ensure compliance, and directs department heads to receive training and then train their staff.
Commissioner Darren Jackson moved to approve Resolution No. 26-31; Commissioner Jeff Masterson seconded and the motion carried 5-0. Facilities Management has already reviewed signage and will document it on the forms included in the policy. The county must have a policy in place before July 1, 2026, to meet the statute's requirements.
The approved policy addresses only multiple-occupancy private spaces (single-occupancy facilities are not covered) and establishes a complaint reporting and investigation process; training and documentation tasks were assigned to relevant departments.
