Butler County will accept bulk tire loads at $300/ton, allow shipment to recycler

The Butler County Commission on June 16 approved a Landfill policy to accept bulk tire loads at a rate of $300 per ton (or the individual tire rate) and to allow the county to ship tires to a recycling facility.
Curtis Mader, Public Works Director, said the county had historically accepted tires and cut them for disposal but staff has observed negative impacts from disposing of whole tires in the landfill. Mader noted that peer jurisdictions contacted — including the City of Salina, Harvey County and Reno County — do not accept whole tires for landfill disposal and that operators at a landfill design class indicated most facilities recycle tires rather than bury them.
Commissioner Kelly Herzet moved to approve the policy and to permit shipping tires out to a recycling facility; Commissioner Darren Jackson seconded and the motion carried 5-0. During related discussion staff reported that white goods are being shipped out of the landfill, chip-seal equipment is down in one area and shoulder mowing is proceeding well.
The policy change is intended to reduce operational and environmental impacts associated with whole-tire disposal and to align Butler County practices with those of nearby jurisdictions.
