Butler County updates planning and zoning fees in first overhaul since 1997

Butler County commissioners voted 5-0 on June 9 to approve an updated Planning and Zoning fee schedule, adopting Resolution No. 26-24. Community Development Director Toby Stewart said the last county fee schedule was approved in 1997 and that the revised schedule specifically itemizes conditional-use fees associated with large-scale commercial and industrial projects.
Commissioner Jeff Masterson said he was concerned about how fee increases could affect smaller businesses applying for conditional-use permits. Commissioner Kelly Herzet moved for approval and Chair Marc Murphy seconded; the motion passed 5-0. The Planning Commission reviewed the proposed changes on June 2 and made no recommended changes before forwarding the schedule to the Board.
The updated fee schedule will be used by staff to recover administrative costs associated with planning applications and to provide clearer cost breakdowns for large-scale applications. Staff did not present a fiscal impact analysis at the meeting; commissioners asked staff to consider small-business impacts when implementing the new schedule.
