Registrar warns of potentially crowded 2026 election calendar

General Registrar Lisa W. McDonald told the board that the 2026 election calendar is uncertain and could include multiple contests. She said there may be a primary — possibly a dual primary — on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, and the General Election is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026. McDonald added that there could be an additional election in April and/or another in August, depending on legislation passed by the Virginia General Assembly affecting redistricting and constitutional amendments.
McDonald said scheduling changes could also affect professional associations and conferences: the Voter Registrars Association of Virginia (VRAV) and the Virginia Electoral Board Association (VEBA) have discussed shifting dates if more elections occur. She asked board members to mark calendars around June 16 and Nov. 3 and to stand by for announcements about any additional elections.
