WEDG celebrates 40 years, says Washington County outperforms state averages on key labor and housing measures

Melanie Bimson, executive director of the Washington Economic Development Group, told the Washington County Board of Supervisors on July 21 that this is “the 40th year for WEDG which was established in 1986,” and reviewed the organization's second-quarter activity.
Bimson said Washington County has a lower unemployment rate than the state average, a higher labor participation rate for residents 16 and older, and a higher homeownership rate than state averages. She described WEDG's partnerships with local governments, nonprofits, contractors and educational institutions to support housing initiatives, workforce training and community marketing designed to attract residents, businesses and visitors to Washington County. “It is estimated that $99,094.00 tax dollars are generated by Washington Business Park that was assisted and marketed by the organization,” she said.
The Board commended Bimson on her first months as executive director. No Board action was required beyond acknowledging receipt of the presentation; the report is available in the County Auditor's office.
