On April 9, 2025 the Newkirk Planning Commission recommended changing the zoning for 300 S. Main St. from R-1 (single-family residential) to C-3 (commercial), a move intended to reflect the property's current use as a vehicle repair shop.
Property owner Ernest Logan described the site as his repair shop on the south end of downtown. City Manager Ryan Smykil told the commission that C-2 was initially sought because it matched many allowable commercial uses under the city zoning code, but Mayor Kellie Johnson said C-3 better matches the surrounding zoning. Board members focused discussion on vehicle parking in front of the shop, the need to keep sidewalks clear for pedestrians, and the availability of off-street parking behind and north of the building.
Member Kyle Moberly moved and Member John Randolph seconded a motion "to recommend granting the rezoning from R-1 to C-3 for 300 S. Main St., Newkirk, Oklahoma." The motion carried unanimously; the meeting minutes record ayes from Hinthorn, Denson, Randolph and Moberly and no nays. The commission's recommendation advances to the next administrative step for formal adoption by the appropriate legislative body.
The commission did not adopt ordinance language at this meeting; the recommendation is a zoning map amendment referral for further action by the city. The next commission meeting is scheduled for July 9, 2025 at City Hall, 107 W. 7th Street.
