Sunriver Observatory urges La Pine to protect dark skies as city grows

Daerek Merrill, speaking on behalf of the Sunriver Observatory, told the council that La Pine’s growth threatens local night-sky quality and urged the city to begin planning to preserve dark skies used by the observatory. Merrill said the community’s ability to see stars is rare and warned that 'dark skies were easy to lose.'
Community Development Director Brent Bybee responded that the City has text amendments forthcoming and that a dark-skies ordinance would be part of that work; he offered that the Planning Department could coordinate with wildfire and dark-sky partners to move the ordinance forward for Council consideration.
