Mission Hills council approves cameras and license-plate readers at three intersections

The Mission Hills City Council on Feb. 9 approved a contract to install cameras and license-plate readers at three intersections — 59th & Oakwood, 67th & Belinder and Brookwood & State Line — with the cost covered from 2025 savings.
Captain Josh Putthoff, Prairie Village Police Department, described technical safeguards and policy controls, saying the system is CJIS-compliant, access is restricted to law enforcement purposes and data are “deleted after 30 days unless retained for evidentiary purposes.” Jennifer Lee, City Administrator, said the total cost is “a little over $75,000” and recommended using year-end savings to fund the project. Putthoff emphasized privacy protections, stating the system is not “big brother” and will be used only for law enforcement purposes.
Mayor Andy Weed and Councilmembers discussed perimeter coverage and long-term funding. Chief Eric McCullough and staff noted Prairie Village’s experience using an equipment reserve for future replacement costs rather than relying on grants. Councilperson Bill Bruning moved approval; Councilperson Eden Thorne seconded. The motion passed 5-0.
The council asked staff to share the department’s camera and LPR policy publicly. City staff also noted they will evaluate whether federal or state grant opportunities exist for future expansions.
