The Chair framed the change as a recognition that the commission's scope has expanded: "the description of what we do is making recommendation, we're supposed to make recommendations to improve waste reduction, reuse and recycling in the City and assist with the development and implementation of citywide resource conservation and sustainability programs." Members discussed whether to change the name to "Sustainability Commission," "Recycling and Sustainability," or another variant and weighed pros and cons: simpler names ("Sustainability Commission") are common in peer towns but the word "recycling" helps residents find the right office.
Commissioners also debated how prescriptive to be in the ordinance about priorities and collaborations with other municipal bodies, and whether to increase membership. One member suggested keeping the ordinance language broad and using priorities and examples for implementation documents rather than codifying an exhaustive list.
Members asked Kim to refine the draft, bring a second version to the next meeting and invite the mayor to discuss the commission's expanded role and priorities.
