Council honors longtime community leader Ed Hemphill

The Chair opened the meeting by recognizing Eddie Hemphill and reading a remembrance of his service to Grand Prairie, saying Hemphill “helped lay the groundwork for what we see here today, a diverse council reflecting our diverse city.”
The Chair outlined Hemphill’s history in Dalworth and on the city council, noting he was the second African American elected to the Grand Prairie City Council in 1990 and served two terms. The mayor provided funeral arrangements: a viewing at 10 a.m. and service at 11 a.m. this Saturday at Saint John’s, and extended the council’s condolences to Hemphill’s family and friends.
The Chair also presented a certificate of appreciation later in the meeting recognizing a youth ambassador, Alessandro Garcia, for advocacy on Tourette Syndrome awareness and for speaking on Capitol Hill in March; the certificate is dated June 2026.
