City updates Spring Creek Forest Preserve sewer assessment; 'pipe out of the preserve' options to be studied

Assistant City Manager Crystal Owens said staff have completed most field work for a damage assessment in the Spring Creek Forest Preserve and are pursuing phased remediation to limit additional impact to the preserve.
Owens said about 60% of inspections are complete and data processing will continue through mid-summer; staff are weighing options to rehabilitate or relocate sewer pipe currently running through the preserve. She described the concept as “Pipe out of the preserve” and said the city will present estimated scope and costs for relocation later in the summer, and will coordinate with Dallas County and volunteer partners to limit construction impacts.
Staff emphasized the project is multi‑phased, will prioritize minimizing additional disturbance to natural areas, and may require access plans for remediation if the line remains in the creek. Owens said the sewer inspection effort began with a sanitary-line assessment because records indicated the line, constructed in 1970, had not been inspected in decades.
