City outlines Holford soccer complex plan and conversion of Jack Coleman to expanded pickleball

Assistant City Manager Andy Hessler told residents the city is developing a multi-field sports complex near Holford and the George Bush Turnpike intended to attract tournaments and private investment.
Hessler said the 40-acre site could host eight fields (some synthetic for all-weather play), include restrooms, concessions and enhanced crossings for pedestrian safety, and accommodate bleachers for up to 1,500 people for championship matches. “This could easily produce a hundred million dollar value on the ground that now becomes commercially taxable property,” Hessler said, and staff have issued a request for proposals for private developers to build mixed uses around the venue. He added the city expects a third-party operator to run the facility so operations do not burden the general fund.
Hessler also described converting part of the Jack Coleman Tennis Center into a larger pickleball complex and adding courts in other locations to meet local demand. Staff said construction would start in the fall with tournament play possible about 16 months later, subject to final scheduling and contracts with operators.
