UN: Gaza remains unsafe for civilians as schools and shelters hit

Farhan said the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is reporting continued military activity in Gaza that leaves the territory unsafe for civilians. He recounted partner reports that a student in Gaza City was taken to hospital after being hit by a bullet in a tented classroom and that Israeli forces demolished homes and the last remaining school in a compound farther north.
"We stress that under international humanitarian law, civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected and should not be targeted," Farhan said. He said humanitarian partners mobilized support for displaced people and emphasized the need for accountability and for learning spaces to remain safe for students and teachers.
When asked whether removal of rubble could violate an International Court of Justice order to preserve evidence, Farhan replied that "all authorities need to abide by the rulings of the International Court of Justice," and noted that interpretation of those rulings is for the authorities themselves to determine.
