Council schedules fire-district briefing, hears resident warning about yard fire risk

Councilor Forsman successfully moved to add an informational agenda item on forming fire districts and local structural fire protection to the Oct. 5 work session; Commissioner Gish and the councilor said they will compile materials and present information to the council.
Earlier in the meeting the mayor read a resident letter that warned "a Spokane fire could easily happen here" and urged enforcement of clean and safe yard rules to reduce the risk from dead trees, brush and flammable debris. The mayor encouraged residents to report unsafe conditions to city code enforcement and to work with neighbors.
Councilors also gave a public tribute to departing Fire Chief Greg Reitmeier, thanking him for his service to the community.
