Council agrees to reallocate small CDBG awards and boost city program funding

Councilmember Dutton pressed for prioritizing Garland‑based organizations and suggested zeroing out applicants that did not meet the $5,000 threshold and redirecting the money to city programs that request it. "I'd be in favor of zeroing out the ones that did not meet the minimum 5,000 and dividing it amongst our departments that requested funds," she said. Staff summarized the agreed approach and said the revised allocations would appear on the June 16 consent agenda for formal approval.
The decision allocates the boxing gym (Police Boxing) at $36,274 and raises the Elderly Yard Care (Code CARES) allocation to $36,300; the remaining balance will be split among the other city program requests (ParkStars and Parks After School) as directed by council.
