Board approves annual pay increases for elected officials
Summary
Kalkaska County commissioners approved annual salary increases for county elected officials, including specific dollar increases for clerk, treasurer, register of deeds, prosecutor and sheriff, and an 8.7% increase for the drain commissioner.
Commissioner David Comai moved and the committee approved annual salary increases for several elected officials at the Jan. 14 committee meeting. The minutes list the approved adjustments: Clerk increase of $5,752.59 to an annual salary of $71,263.59; Treasurer increase of $7,428.09 to an annual salary of $70,987.09; Register of Deeds increase of $5,315.33 to $69,326.33; Prosecutor increase of $9,059.81 to $105,738.81; Sheriff increase of $7,112.60 to $85,389.60; and an 8.7% increase to the Drain Commissioner salary.
Administrator Whiteford said the board had previously followed comparative averages from designated counties and that the elected wages had lagged due to no annual increases in 2024 and 2025. Commissioners discussed funding and acknowledged that if the matter were tabled again the discrepancy would continue to grow. Commissioner Truman Bicum supported the motion; no opposition was recorded in the minutes.
