Kalkaska County commissioners on March 11 scheduled a special meeting at 5:00 PM on March 31 to review a County Road Commission request for a proposed road millage and related millage renewals. County Administrator/CFO Patrick Whiteford told the committee that a millage proposal must be filed with the county clerk by May 12, 2026, at 4:00 PM to appear on the August ballot.
Commissioner David Persons said he "offered a figure of 18 million" as one possible scale for the proposal; other commissioners discussed whether a new separate building for road equipment or continued use of the existing building would best meet needs. Commissioner David Comai said he favored limiting the project to a separate equipment building rather than broader new construction, while Commissioners Jeff Sieting and Robert Baldwin expressed differing priorities about truck storage and facility condition.
The committee moved by consensus to place a Special Meeting on March 31 for a focused review of the Road Commission's millage request and the Animal Control and Recycle millage renewals and forwarded that scheduling to the March 18 regular meeting agenda. Administrator Whiteford said the county is still awaiting engineering cost information from Hobbs and Black to inform any final proposal.
